Fang Shouxian, male, was born in Shanghai on October 27, 1932. He is a high energy accelerator physicist. He graduated from Fudan University in 1955. He has worked in the Institute of Modern Physics and the Institute of Atomic Energy. Now he is working in the Institute of High Energy Physics. In the early 60s, he discovered the non-isochromatic phenomenon of isochromatic cyclotron and developed a dispersion suppress method suitable to small and medium-sized synchrotrons, thereby achieving world acknowledged success in developing accelerator technologies.
He has served as project director of the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC) and director of the Institute of High Energy Physics. During his term of office, he exercised full leadership of the construction, operation and upgrade of the BEPC, thus making possible for the BEPC to operate on time and stand at the forefront in the world as against other accelerators in the same energy region in terms of all its performances.
In 1991, he was elected member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). From 1996 to 1998, he served as director of the Department of Mathematics and Physics, CAS.
He was a member of the 8th and 9th National Political Consultative Conference.
He is now a full professor of IHEP, tutor for Ph.D students and also director of the Beijing Electron Positron Collider National Laboratory. In 1986, he was conferred the title “National Outstanding Middle-Aged Scientist”. In 1990, he was awarded the Supreme National Prize for Science and Technology Progress and in 1997, he won Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation – Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize.
He has served as a member of the International Committee for Future Accelerators, a member of the International Advisory Committee of Korean Pohang Synchrotron Light Source and also a member of the International Scientific Advisory Committee for the 8 GeV Synchrotron Facility (SPRING-8) of the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) and Japanese Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). Now he is a member of the Chinese Nuclear Society and president of the Chinese Particle Accelerator Society, a member of the editorial department for the journal Particle Accelerator and chairman of the science and technology committees for Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou – Cooling Storage Ring (HIRFL – CSR), Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Light Source and the second phase project of Hefei Synchrotron Radiation Facility.
Starting from the late 90s, he dedicated himself to the study of high power proton accelerator for the accelerator driven sub-critical system. He has been very active in doing research on synchrotron radiation light source and spallation neutron source. He has made contributions in developing advanced accelerator technologies and promoting accelerator applications in industry, medical treatment, etc.
